Our Club's Dance thus Far

       Big band music floats through the room, the sound of trumpets and saxophones punctuating the air with anticipation. The excited chatter of college students taking a break from homework fills the spaces in between. The circle of dancers watches closely as the presidents demonstrate technique and make the labyrinth of steps look like as simple as walking. Laughter joins the chorus as dancers attempt new moves. The light pitter-patter of feet rehearse the steps that to some feel as familiar as the practice area of Holt Gallery and to others are brand new. Time seems to disappear in this swirl of music, breath, spins, and laughter.

 

      This is just a taste of our club meetings every Sunday and Thursday night. Swing Dance Club is an energetic gathering for anyone in the Principia Community who wants to have a ton of fun while swing dancing! We hope everyone leaves club meetings with the joy of swing dance.

     Swing dance, which originally evolved from the popular Big Band music and jazz variations of the 1920s and 1930s, still makes toes tap and smiles widen. Numerous classes of Principia College students have carried this art form forward as membership has ebbed and flowed. Thanks to many years of learning, teaching, and dancing, swing has become a pastime at Principia College, as it is offered at college-wide dances and is popular among students from all backgrounds.

      In addition to joy, we hope to share valuable dance technique in order to make swing more effortless and fun. Our social dance environment provides lessons to beginning and experienced dancers and everyone in between. Each club meeting builds from previous weeks and free dance is always included.  

​

      In addition to our club meetings we also enjoy club outings to various dance events in St. Louis. With the upbeat, brassy sound of big band music, a group of friends, and some moves, our members are guaranteed to have a blast!
